Analysis of a contents page

Vibe is a music and entertainment magazine founded by producer Quincy Jones. The publication predominantly features R&B and hip-hop music artists, actors and other entertainers. The magazine owed its success to featuring a broader range of interests than its closest competitors. (Wikipedia)

The overall look of this contents page has a warm feel and tone to it. The colours are all fairly neutral and sophisticated tone using soft browns and whites; this matches the models skin tone complimenting her best assets, such as her legs which form the shape of a V at the top of the page. Readers should subconsciously notice this, which advertises and promotes the magazine more so, and tends to stick in the persons head. It is subtle so as not to attract too much unwanted attention. The name of the actual magazine is not printed much on this page. It appears only to be in small writing in the right hand corner, so it is important that the readers recognise the V.

The title of the contents page is in clear, easy-read, bold text; this grabs the reader’s attention and clearly informs the reader of what the page consists of. The font is in capital letters, making it stand out even more so.

The sub headings ‘features’ and ‘fashion’ are in a fancy font which separates them from the texts below them which are simplistic. They highlight the two main aspects of the magazine, features on life and music, then fashion. The column of writing is laid out in a block, straight position. There is nothing overlapping with the text and the writing fits in well with the rest of the page.

The model is making clear distinctive eye contact with the reader. She looks mysterious, which instantly gets the readers full attention. She seems to be lying in a seemingly uncomfortable position, but the focus is away from this and on her face and legs.
