Bauer media is the largest privately owned publisher in Europe and has some extremely successful magazines such as Kerrang and Q. As most magazines don’t make it too any mainstream shelves, I feel that with the help of this successful publisher, my magazine could be successful. Such a successful company could come with a lot of advantages that would help my magazine to also be successful. If Bauer were to ask for a percentage of the media rights, this would mean that they would be able to work alongside me to improve the magazine and to help me to achieve the connection to the social groups and target audience I am trying to aim at. As my magazine is eventually aiming to be distributed nationally, Bauer would help to sell the magazine to really well-known companies such as WHSmiths which would add to the credibility of the magazine where people I am aiming my magazine at would notice the magazine. These companies could also help the first issue to be published and advertised well. Bauer also has distribution agreements with several different outlets in the UK meaning that copies of different magazines are sold in every store in the country.
Another large production company that could be good to work with would be IPC media. This is owned my Time Warner, one of the biggest multinational media companies in the world. This would mean that although my editorial independance and editorial rights may be effected, it is extremely likely that with such a big company, the magazine would be sucsessful, meaning that more of a profit would be made. IPC Media produces over 60 iconic media brands, with print alone reaching almost two thirds of UK women and 42% of UK men.
Although when being associated with a big media company such as Bauer, or IPC would mean that there is a costly price that would have to be paid, meaning that I could lose out on money. If I were too give them some of the media rights this would mean that I would lose quite a lot of the editorial rights and control. If there was to be a profit, the publishing company would take a large percentage of this meaning that I would get less. Also if i were to go with a big company they may make me pay as much attention to advertisers as you do to your audience in order to maximise your profits.
Magazines make their profit from the cover price and through advertising. If I was to go through Bauer, then they would find it easy to secure good advertisement for the magazine. Whereas if I were to go with a smaller company, I don’t think the advertisement would be as well-known or successful.
When looking at what companies I would like to be published with, I had to take into consideration what types of magazines the company has already published. I found that a lot of the publishes seemed to have a big gap in the market with my target audience. I think that althought Beaur is also an extremely sucsessful company, i would be enclined to work with IPC media, simply because they are owned by Time Warner, meaning that it is more liekly that a larger profit will be made.
